The dressy G-shockJul 14, 2007
By G. Latham The G-shock is a revered brand of tough-going Casio watches. This particular model is new (indeed, I couldn't find a single detailed review anywhere on the Internet), and sports some interesting features that are a departure from the conventional G-shock styling and feature set. For example, the design. The G011D is a combination analog-digital that aims to offer the best of both worlds. Naturally, there are compromises. The two digital displays are rather small, the equivalent of reading 7-9 pt font in a standard printout. In this black faced model, the LED readouts are white; they are easily read in direct sunlight, but difficult to read in the low light conditions. The watch does have a tiny LED light situated between the 35 and 40 minute positions, and although this light is handy for providing a brief burst of rather intense illumination (3 sec max), it does not allow one to easily read in particular the more informative right digital frame. Moreover, the LED light is yellow (like a sodium lamp); I would have preferred white. Though obvious, it is worth mentioning that the analog minute hand covers up each of the digital portals when promixal, meaning that these features aren't legible for about 15 min out of each hour. The hour and minute hands are painted with phosphor, and they glow brilliantly in the dark without any active illumination. But the hands themselves strike me as flimsy, a stark contrast with the rest of the watch.
Most G-shocks are big watches. I picked this one because I like the idea of the LED illumination, the analog-digital combination, the dressier appeal, and the smaller face (I have small wrists). It is thick (14.7 mm), but not unreasonably so. It does look nice in a modern sort of way. I really like the timer, stopwatch, and multiple alarm features (missing in my last watch, a Tag), and the security that I can treat it roughly. Operation is a bit clumsy in places, particularly the synchronization of the digital and the analog times (which isn't automated). No word yet on the mineral crystal; one hopes it can withstand scratches well enough. All in all, I really do like the watch: the styling is sufficiently versatile to suit all occasions, and although it lacks the atomic time sync, I can live with an accuracy of +/- 15 sec per month. This is my first watch in 12 years, and my only suggestions for improvement would be a white, rather than yellow LED light, EL illumination of the digital window concurrent with LED illumination, the ability to illuminate for longer than 3 sec at a time (when fumbling around in a dark room, eg), and, in a perfect world, a slimmer design. But for $100, this attractive, full-featured watch with reported G-shock durability is a solid value.

Solid metal G-shock watchJan 31, 2008
By Tony Liu

Just got the watch - :D
first impressions
I wanted a stainless steel watch with dual time capability (world time mode works well for this)
so i know what time it is in another country...and this is just perfect
Not only is does it feel solid (like a G-shock), it has a very classy design with imformative digital read outs large enough
without straining the eye.Alright, lets bullet the point out for this watch:
positives:
1.)The watch was fairly easy to set (kinda annoying to set the analog though - need to let the hands run around and around)
2.)The band feels fairly solid, like the other brand name watches in the 200-300 range
3.)its a heavy watch (I think of this as a positive - im a fairly big guy)
4.)looks great. I bought the white faced one. This thing has a hummer look to it. The white textured background (not printed
on cheap paper) gives it a whiff of elegance. When the amber lights turn on, looks downright classy.
5.) most of metal on the watch is not the shiny type, should be fairly scratch resistance
6.)it is a rare item; finally a proper stylish metalic G shock - hope it hold up like a G-shock
7.) LCDs are quite readable (not sure about the inverse lcds)
negatives (this is small picky stuff)
1.) when I recieved the watch, there were some scatches like someone just returned it...:(..beware, good thing i was able to buff out most of it
2.) hands will block out some of the digital readout, but not all of it (could be read off from an angle)
3.) parts of the back (framage) is made out of the type of plastic in plastic g shocks (not all metal..oh well)
4.) mechanically intensive (you can hear it click when u set the analog time) - might run the battery down fast
5.) heavy - not light like a seiko; think of it as a heavy divers watch
I was originally planning to buy the Timex one (the one that was in stranger than fiction, but after checking it out at
a store, it just didnt look good (looks like a regular ole watch with a lcd in the back); this one has style but
at double the cost :( - oh well, lets hope it hold up for a while

Diving Watch reviewAug 13, 2007
By Bryan Garris When I was looking for a watch that I could go SCUBA diving in, most of them were >$200 and had rubber bands that did not look that nice. This watch not only was very reasonably priced, but looked very nice as well. The crown is a little tall, but for a diving watch is acceptable. All the additional features are very nice, which is mostly just a bonus to me but some may find them more useful. Overall I would definately make this purchase again, if you are not wanting a watch for diving read the specs carefully, it does have a tall face.
